Pam's Fundraising for Education in North India

Late last year I was asked to join Marian, who had decided to take up the challenge and raise funds for the education of disadvantaged children in North India through UnitingWorld.   I jumped at the opportunity. The people of the Amritsar region have suffered disadvantage and discrimination for many years, causing them to be living in poverty, exacerbated by the lack of educational opportunities and poor health facilities. In the past, women and girls in particular, have been denied their right to education, which has limited their chances of ever breaking from the cycle of poverty.

During our endeavour to raise funds  for the  project, we will also be vigorously training  to get fit enough to take up the challenge of  trekking across Himalayan mountain peaks and into traditional villages, while we visit schools, and volunteer with the development arm of the local Church to alleviate poverty.  Having worked in a small country school myself for over twenty years, I have a great interest in the education of children.  Two years ago, I travelled to South America, and observed the disparity between educational opportunities for many of the children there, compared to Australian children.

This year I’m really looking forward to visiting schools in the North of India, and joining others in the trekking challenge to raise funds for the project, which will help provide educational staff and resources to improve literacy skills and assist in health care.
